Speaking on the occasion, The Vice Chancellor Dr Ishtiaq Ahmad stressed that detecting cancer early makes it easier to treat or even to cure. He was of the opinion that early detection of cancer greatly increased the chances for successful treatment.
He opined that prevention is better than cure, and urged to avoid the usage of low quality packed milk, soft drinks, snacks, factory bread, broiler chicken and other processed foods which may cause cancer.
While encouraging the youth to involve themselves in such activities, he said that most wonderful thing about the UOS is the participation of youth in healthy activities which has no comparison.
Chairman Department of Food Sciences and Nutrition Dr Anjum Murtaza informed that cancer is now one of the world’s biggest healthcare challenges; every year 8.2 million people die worldwide due to cancer while 14 million new cancer cases are registered every year.
In Pakistan, 150,000 new cases of cancer are registered annually, therefore, to reduce this number, there is a dire need to encourage the consumption of those foods which enhance the body's immune response to cancer, the chairman concluded.
