The University of Sargodha organized an awareness walk and seminar in connection with the International Day for the Prevention of Violent Extremism, in collaboration with the Department of Sociology and Criminology and the Punjab Probation and Parole Service.

The event aimed to sensitize students and young people to the dangers of violent extremism, its underlying causes and effective strategies to counter it.

The walk was led by Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Qaisar Abbas, whereas the ceremony was attended by Assistant Director Punjab Probation and Parole Service Muhammad Amir Aslam, Dean Faculty of Sciences Prof. Dr. Amir Ali, Chairperson Department of Sociology and Criminology Dr. Shehzad Khawar Mushtaq, Director Riaz Shad Co-Curricular Forum Dr. Muhammad Munir Gujjar, Director Student Affairs Dr. Mehmoodul Hassan, Mufti Haroon and a large number of students.

While addressing the participants, Prof. Dr. Qaisar Abbas observed that such programmes fostered positive thinking, patience and mutual respect among young people โ€” qualities that serve as a natural barrier against the spread of violent extremism.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Amir Aslam said violent extremism was a global challenge that could not be addressed solely through law enforcement measures. He noted that factors such as poverty, social inequality, lack of education and political marginalization often contributed to the spread of extremist tendencies, and called for a collective response to address these root causes.

Referring to Pakistanโ€™s context, he emphasised the role of educational institutions, youth leadership and community-based initiatives in promoting tolerance, dialogue and constructive social values. He added that institutions such as the Punjab Probation and Parole Service were playing a significant role in rehabilitation and reintegration by providing counseling, supervision and social support programmes to individuals under judicial orders, thereby contributing to social stability and public safety.

He urged students to develop not only academic competence but also a strong sense of civic responsibility to help build a peaceful and resilient society.

Dr. Shehzad Khawar Mushtaq stressed the need for coordinated and sustained efforts involving educational institutions, public bodies, civil society and youth to effectively counter extremist narratives and promote a culture of peace. Mufti Haroon also addressed the Seminar.
