The Faculty of Agriculture, University of Sargodha, organised an awareness walk to mark World Cotton Day 2026 and highlight the importance of cotton to Pakistan’s agriculture and economy.
Dean Faculty of Agriculture Prof. Dr. Muhammad Ashraf led the walk, which was attended by Principal College of Agriculture Prof. Dr. Ijaz Rasool Noorka, Prof. Dr. Athar Nadeem, faculty membrs and a large number of students.
The speakers said cotton remained one of Pakistan’s key agricultural crops, supporting the livelihoods of millions of farming households and providing raw material to the country’s textile industry. They said the crop also played an important role in rural employment, industrial activity, exports and the wider agricultural value chain.
They said World Cotton Day provided an opportunity to create awareness about the economic and social significance of cotton and promote efforts for a stronger and more sustainable cotton sector. The theme for this year’s observance, “Cotton for Good: Building Prosperity through Trade, Transformation and Partnership”, highlighted the need for cooperation and innovation across the cotton value chain.
The speakers noted that Pakistan’s cotton production faced challenges including climate change, water shortages, pest attacks, declining productivity and quality concerns. They stressed the need for research-based farming practices, quality seed, efficient use of water, improved crop management and modern technologies to enhance productivity and strengthen the country’s cotton sector.
The walk concluded with a call for greater awareness among students and farmers about sustainable cotton production and the importance of the crop to Pakistan’s agricultural economy.
